(Ph)fat

This is the image that sparked our first discussion. The debate in the comments is much too long to be copy/pasted here, so here's a link to the Facebook thread itself.

Read it, reflect, and tell us what you think.

  1. Ok Devon, I'll bite. I read the comments on FB, and think that the biology argument is thrown out there, but never fully realized. I would argue that because our society has become less active, and more well fed, the elite are now the thinner people in society. In areas where food is less plentiful, and the work of living more difficult, women with some extra pounds do tend to be glorified. This is less of an individual imperative, as it is a societal mandate of what is rare in the culture.

On to my personal struggle with this topic: I do feel that I have been somewhat damaged by the messages of not thin enough, not pretty enough, that I have received almost my entire life, and I am constantly amazed that there are those people out there that feel like it is ok to humiliate and degrade someone based on their appearance. On the other hand, I have probably thought worse things about myself (when my iron grip on my self-esteem slips) than anyone has ever spoken to me.

One almost has to develop a split personality to deal with the dichotomy of views. On the one hand I know that I am an amazing, beautiful woman, and on the other hand I also know that I am horribly overweight, and unattractive. To live with those waring viewpoints is a special type of hell.

I will wrap up my ramblings on this, with a thank you for allowing a soapbox, and for questioning the status quo.
